If you're a new mom and want to start pumping there are so many questions. What pump do I use? Should I buy an electric pump or manual pump? Where do I pump?
First, we've got you covered! You can use MomsPumpHere.com to find a location to pump breast milk near you, rate your pumping locations or add a location that's not listed.
Second, there are lots of pros and cons for using an electric pump and a manual pump. It all comes down to convenience and how much work you are willing to put in.
Manual Pump
Pros
- Light weight and easy to carry. Most manual pumps don't have a lot of parts and can easily fit in your bag.
- No need to find an outlet to plug in.
- Manual pumps are not as expensive as electric ones.
- Some insurances offer manual pumps for free after having a baby.
Cons
- Manual pumps can be a lot of work. You have to use your hands to pump the milk. Your hands will eventually hurt.
- Because you're getting tired from manually pumping it can get messy. You will shift the pump over your breast, take it off and on to get comfortable, etc. No fun.
Electric Pump
Pros
- Hands free devices are awesome. Your hands won't get tired and you can do other things while your electric pump is going, like reading, napping, catching up on work, surfing YouTube and more.
- Less mess. Most electric pumps are outfitted to stay on. No shifting your pump or taking it off.
Cons
- More expensive. The more high tech you get the more money it will cost. There are now hands free pumps you can place in your bra that are $300 +.
- Some electric pumps are heavy and bulky. This can be really inconvenient traveling with an extra bag.
- Electric pumps can be loud. If you want to be discreet, using an electric pump is not the way to go. The newer more high tech pumps are quieter.
