So I know many former single free spirited moms like myself (as in no kids and could travel whenever to whereever) can relate to this. You partner up with a great somebody in a relationship, become new parents, and suddenly so long to dates, spontaneous trips and travel adventures and long nights with your partner....you are now a parent like me and my husband!
Finding time to be a couple who ventured to far destinations on demand is now one of the hardest things to plan or do as a new parent. However, fun and adventure is still in reach, though you might have to keep it short and real local.
First things first - child care - some of these ideas require child care but if you really get creative you don't need one. What you do need is flexibility, a sense of humor and the ability to hustle and create going out opportunities.
1. Make it a Car Date
Required: A car/gas, food, a destination or no destination
Not Required: Child care
Some people might call it getting out the house and driving around, but Driving is one of the best ways to get a baby to sleep. The lull and rythem of the car's movement can put a baby to sleep. With that said, a date night, afternoon or morning is possible with the use of your family car. The both of you can hop into your car with your baby (safely strapped in) with a plan to drive for at least an hour or two. You can have a destination to stop or several stops or no stops but the idea here is to stay local enough to get home if you need to.
Prior to your car date consider what you need to bring along: baby bag with baby supplies, snacks for you and your partner and music or podcast to play while driving.
Timing: Be flexible or think about your baby's schedule. When will your baby nap? How late or early are you willing to go for a drive.
Your drive should be a time to talk, laugh and unwind. Snack while driving (in a safe way - no alcohol). If the baby starts to cry uncontrollably go back home and plan to try again another day. The goal here is to be in the moment, be light hearted and flexible enough to go with the moment.
2. PIZZERIA NIGHT
Required: Child care
Once you've acquired a responsible short-term caretaker and the baby has gone to sleep, immediately begin your "us" time. Why not hop in the car for a short trip to your local pizzeria for wings AND a non-alcoholic drink? You can't beat the combo! You can talk, play music while eating the cheesy awesomeness all while the baby monitoring app is running on your smartphone.
Timing: when baby is sleeping, perferrably at night.
3. Cozy Cafe or Restaurant Date
Required: Child care
Timing: whatever time is best for both of you.
Sometimes, the best way to unwind is over a delicious meal in a cozy setting. Choose a local cafe or restaurant that offers a relaxed atmosphere, good food, and maybe even live music. Many local eateries offer date night specials or themed nights that add a touch of fun to your evening travel out.
Why It’s Perfect: A quiet dinner allows you to focus on each other without distractions. It's an opportunity to have uninterrupted conversations, enjoy your favorite dishes, and indulge in some much-needed relaxation.
Pro Tip: Opt for a restaurant with comfortable seating and a calm ambiance. Make a reservation to avoid waiting times, and consider selecting a place with a variety of menu options to suit both your tastes. If possible, pick a spot with a cozy corner or a booth for a more intimate setting.
4. Stroll Through a Botanical Garden or Park
Nature has a way of soothing the soul, and a leisurely stroll through a local botanical garden or park destination can be the perfect date night activity. Many botanical gardens offer evening hours, allowing you to enjoy the beauty of nature under the stars. Parks, on the other hand, can be a serene escape from the hustle and bustle of daily life.
Why It’s Perfect: Walking hand-in-hand through beautiful gardens or lush greenery provides a peaceful and romantic setting. It's a great way to unwind, get some fresh air, and have meaningful conversations without any distractions.
Pro Tip: Check the schedule for any special events or evening programs at the botanical garden or park, such as guided tours, light displays, or outdoor concerts. Bringing a blanket and a thermos of hot chocolate can make the experience even more enjoyable.
5. Attend a Local Theater or Live Performance
Immerse yourselves in culture and entertainment by attending a local theater production, concert, or live performance. Whether it's a play, a musical, a comedy show, or a live band, experiencing live performances together can be a thrilling and memorable date night activity.
Why It’s Perfect: Watching a live performance can be an exhilarating experience that allows you to escape into a different world for a couple of hours. It’s a shared experience that can spark interesting conversations and create lasting memories.
Pro Tip: Look for local theaters or performance venues that offer shows of interest to both of you. Many theaters offer discounted tickets for certain performances or special date night packages. Arrive early to get good seats and enjoy a pre-show drink at the venue’s bar or café.
6. Explore a Local Museum or Art Gallery
If you and your partner enjoy art and history, exploring a local museum or art gallery can make for an enlightening and enjoyable date night. Many museums offer evening hours and special exhibitions that can provide a unique and engaging experience.
Why It’s Perfect: Visiting a museum or gallery allows you to learn and discover new things together. It’s a quiet and contemplative activity that can inspire deep conversations and a greater appreciation for art and history.
Pro Tip: Check if the museum or gallery offers guided tours or audio guides to enhance your experience. Look for special events, such as late-night openings, themed nights, or temporary exhibitions that might interest you both. Plan to have a coffee or dessert afterward to discuss your favorite exhibits.
7. Cooking Class or Wine Tasting Event
For a hands-on and interactive date night, consider taking a cooking class or attending a wine tasting event. Many local culinary schools, restaurants, and wineries offer classes and events where you can learn new skills, taste delicious food and wine, and have a lot of fun together.
Why It’s Perfect: A cooking class or wine tasting event is a fantastic way to bond over a shared activity. It’s an opportunity to try something new, laugh together, and maybe even learn some new recipes to try at home.
Pro Tip: Look for classes or events that focus on a cuisine or type of wine that you both enjoy. Many places offer date night specials or packages that include a meal or a bottle of wine to take home. Don’t forget to take pictures to capture the fun moments!
8. Relaxing Spa Night
Sometimes, the best way to reconnect is through relaxation and pampering. Like a mom spa day, a couples spa night can provide the perfect escape for new parents who need a break from the daily grind. Many local spas offer couples’ packages that include massages, facials, and other treatments designed to relax and rejuvenate.
Why It’s Perfect: A spa night allows you to unwind and de-stress together. It’s a peaceful and intimate experience that can leave you both feeling refreshed and reconnected.
Pro Tip: Choose a spa that offers a variety of treatments and amenities, such as hot tubs, saunas, or relaxation lounges. Consider booking a package that includes multiple treatments for a complete spa experience. After your spa treatments, enjoy a quiet dinner or dessert to extend the relaxation.
9. GO SEE A MOVIE
Required: Child care
Not required: Stress
Hey we might as well throw a fourth date night idea there. You can't go wrong just the two of you going to see a fun movie. Of course it goes without mention, it's best to stick witrh an early evening screening versus a late night. There's a set clock on getting back to your baby for feedings and snuggling.
Balancing the demands of parenthood with maintaining a strong relationship can be challenging, but it’s essential for new moms and dads to prioritize their connection. Date nights provide a valuable opportunity to step away from the responsibilities of parenting, enjoy each other’s company, and create lasting memories. Whether you go out for a cozy dinner, a stroll through a park, go see a quick live performance, a museum visit, a cooking class, or a spa night, these local destination date night ideas offer something for every couple.
Dating your partner after baby does not have to be stressful. If you have the luxury of having more lavish dates with built in childcare go for it! Or if you are low key, no fuss, one of these ideas will get you both back on track or spark some dating creativity. Coupling doesn't have to be hard after baby.
