Key West, Florida, is a tropical paradise that offers a mix of adventure, relaxation, and cultural experiences perfect for families. As a mom who lived and worked in South Florida for 10 years, I took multiple family trips to the Florida keys, and Key West was by far the most exciting of them all. Getting the Family There
Key West is one of many family-friendly destinations I rank as must visit places in Florida, including Disney World, and Universal Orlando. If you're traveling in, most likely you're landing in Key West International Airport. Rent a car or uber it from there, it's only a nice 15 minute drive to the hotels and motels in the tourist-centric Duval Street radius. For me and my family when we lived there we enjoyed the ride in, crossing through all the other keys and enjoying the view over the 7 Mile Bridge. You have to experience this drive over the tropical waters, it's beautiful.
1. Visit the Key West Butterfly and Nature Conservatory

Fort Zachary Taylor Historic State Park offers some of the best snorkeling opportunities in Key West. The Key West Aquarium is one of the oldest aquariums in Florida and offers interactive exhibits that are perfect for kids. Here, families can learn about the marine life native to the Florida Keys, including sharks, rays, and sea turtles. There are plenty of ice cream shops and snack stands to keep the kids happy, as well as unique boutiques and souvenir stores. Be sure to stop by Kermit’s Key West Key Lime Shoppe for a taste of the famous Key lime pie.
8. Take a Day Trip to Dry Tortugas National Park
For an unforgettable adventure, take a day trip to Dry Tortugas National Park. It's accessible only by boat or seaplane. My family and I paid and hopped on the Yankee Freedom Dry Tortugas Ferry to get over there. This remote park is home to the historic Fort Jefferson and offers pristine beaches, crystal-clear waters, and excellent snorkeling. The boat trip itself took us two and a half hours, and is an exciting experience for kids, and the park provides plenty of opportunities for exploring, swimming, and learning about history and nature.
9. Enjoy a Sunset Celebration at Mallory Square
Mallory Square is famous for its nightly Sunset Celebration, a must-do for any family visiting Key West. As the sun sets over the Gulf of Mexico, street performers, musicians, and artisans gather to entertain the crowds. It's a festive atmosphere where kids can enjoy the performances, and everyone can appreciate the stunning sunset views. Arrive early to get a good spot and enjoy the variety of street food and local crafts available.
