Wrigley Field, located in the heart of Chicago, is one of the most iconic baseball stadiums in the world. Home to the Chicago Cubs, this historic ballpark has been a beloved destination for sports fans and families alike since it opened in 1914. Whether you’re a die-hard Cubs fan or just looking for a fun family outing, Wrigley Field offers a unique and memorable experience. Here are some fun facts and tips for families traveling to Wrigley Field.
Wrigley Field is the second-oldest ballpark in Major League Baseball, surpassed only by Fenway Park in Boston. It was originally called Weeghman Park before being renamed in 1926 after the Wrigley family, who owned the Chicago Cubs. The ballpark’s rich history includes hosting the first National League game in 1916 and being the site of numerous memorable moments in baseball history.
One of Wrigley Field’s most distinctive features is the ivy-covered outfield walls. The ivy, which was planted in 1937, is a beautiful and unique characteristic of the ballpark. During the spring and summer months, the ivy grows lush and green, creating a picturesque backdrop for the game. In the fall, the ivy turns a brilliant shade of red, adding to the ballpark’s charm.
The red marquee above the main entrance to Wrigley Field is an iconic symbol of the ballpark. Installed in 1934, the marquee welcomes fans to the stadium and announces upcoming games and events. It has become a popular spot for photos, and no visit to Wrigley Field is complete without snapping a picture in front of the marquee.
Another unique feature of Wrigley Field is the rooftop seating available on buildings across the street from the ballpark. These rooftops offer a one-of-a-kind view of the game and have become an integral part of the Wrigley Field experience. Many rooftops offer all-inclusive packages that include food and beverages, making it a fun and convenient option for families.
Wrigley Field is famous for its tradition of singing “Take Me Out to the Ball Game” during the seventh-inning stretch. This tradition was popularized by legendary broadcaster Harry Caray, who led the crowd in singing the song from 1982 until his death in 1998. Today, guest conductors continue the tradition, making it a fun and interactive experience for fans of all ages.
In an age of digital technology, Wrigley Field’s manual scoreboard is a charming throwback to a bygone era. The scoreboard, which was installed in 1937, is operated by hand and provides a classic touch to the ballpark. Watching the scoreboard operators update the scores inning by inning is a fascinating sight and a reminder of the game’s rich history.
