Fun Facts for Traveling Moms and Kids at Denver International Airport
Traveling with kids can be an adventure, especially when navigating through a large airport like Denver International Airport (DIA). Known for its distinctive architecture and extensive amenities, DIA offers plenty of attractions and conveniences that make the travel experience enjoyable for both moms and their little ones. Here are some fun facts and helpful tips for making the most of your time at DIA.
One of the most striking features of DIA is its iconic tent-like roof structure, designed to resemble the snow-capped peaks of the Rocky Mountains. Kids will be fascinated by the unique architecture, and it's a great opportunity to talk to them about how buildings can be designed to reflect their surroundings. The white peaks are especially beautiful when lit up at night, creating a magical sight that both kids and adults will enjoy.
DIA is home to a variety of captivating art installations. The "Mustang" sculpture, also known as "Blucifer," is a 32-foot blue horse with glowing red eyes located at the entrance to the airport. While its appearance can be startling, kids often find it fascinating. Inside the terminal, you’ll find numerous murals, sculptures, and other artworks that are both engaging and educational. Take a walk through the airport to explore these pieces, and use them as a chance to teach kids about different forms of art.
The Jeppesen Terminal, the main terminal at DIA, features a spacious atrium with plenty of natural light. The open space is perfect for letting kids stretch their legs before a long flight. The atrium also hosts seasonal displays and events, adding an element of surprise to your visit. During the holiday season, for instance, the terminal is beautifully decorated, creating a festive atmosphere that kids will love.
DIA understands the needs of families traveling with young children and provides several interactive play areas. The playgrounds are equipped with climbing structures, slides, and other fun activities that allow kids to burn off energy before boarding their flight. These areas are conveniently located near the gates, making it easy for moms to keep an eye on their little ones while waiting to board.
For moms looking to combine fun with education, DIA offers various exhibits that are both entertaining and informative. The "Colorado Sports Hall of Fame" exhibit celebrates the state's rich sports history and is sure to captivate young sports enthusiasts. Additionally, the airport frequently hosts rotating exhibits that cover a range of topics, from aviation history to local wildlife, providing a unique learning experience for kids.
Traveling can be stressful, especially for children. DIA's Canine Airport Therapy Squad (CATS) program brings therapy dogs into the terminal to help calm and comfort travelers. These friendly dogs and their handlers roam the airport, providing a welcome distraction for kids and adults alike. Petting and interacting with the dogs can help reduce travel anxiety and make the airport experience more pleasant for everyone.
DIA offers a wide variety of dining options that cater to families. Many restaurants provide kid-friendly menus and high chairs, ensuring that even the pickiest eaters will find something they like. Favorites include McDonald's, Einstein Bros. Bagels, and Chick-fil-A, but there are also healthier options available such as Root Down and Modern Market Eatery. Moms can relax and enjoy a meal while keeping their kids satisfied.
Navigating a large airport can be daunting, but DIA's efficient concourse train system and automated walkways make it easier. Kids will enjoy the short train rides between terminals, which are quick and convenient. The automated walkways also provide a fun way for kids to move through the airport without getting too tired. Plus, the train stations often feature interesting art installations, adding an element of fun to the journey.
Kids are often fascinated by airplanes, and DIA provides several viewing areas where they can watch planes take off and land. These areas are equipped with large windows and comfortable seating, making them an ideal spot to spend some time before your flight. It's a great opportunity to teach kids about how airplanes work and spark their interest in aviation.
DIA has a range of shops that offer unique souvenirs, from Colorado-themed gifts to educational toys. Stores like Kazoo & Company Toys provide a variety of fun and educational items that kids will love. Picking out a special souvenir can be a fun way to commemorate the trip and give kids something to look forward to.
Traveling can be exhausting, but DIA offers various services to help moms and kids relax. The airport has several nursing rooms equipped with comfortable seating and privacy, making it easier for moms to take care of their infants. Additionally, there are family restrooms located throughout the terminal, providing convenient facilities for families with young children.
Denver International Airport offers a wide range of amenities and attractions that make traveling with kids a fun and enjoyable experience. From interactive play areas and educational exhibits to family-friendly dining options and unique art installations, there’s something for everyone at DIA.
