Most Interesting Things for Visiting Moms and Kids to See at Cleveland Metroparks Zoo
We've come across many zoos around the US and Canada during our travels. We got into Cleveland through Cleveland Hopkins International Airport just 12 minutes and 9 miles from the zoo. So what did we find out about the Cleveland Zoo? Cleveland Metroparks Zoo like many others, is great for moms and kids looking to see nature, and exotic animals right in their own back yard. There's over 183 acres of captivating exhibits and more than 3,000 animals to observe. Here are some of the most interesting things we saw and did during our visit.
1. African Elephant Crossing
One of the zoo’s biggest attractions, African Elephant Crossing is a must-see for families. This expansive five-acre habitat is home to a herd of majestic African elephants. Kids will love watching these gentle giants roam, interact, and even bathe in their custom-made pools. The exhibit includes viewing areas that give visitors the chance to observe elephants up close. Moms will appreciate the educational opportunities here, with interactive displays explaining the importance of elephant conservation and care.
2. Australian Adventure
The Australian Adventure exhibit transports families to the land down under. Children will be thrilled to encounter koalas, kangaroos, and wallabies, as well as playful dingoes. A highlight of this area is the Wallaby Walkabout, where visitors can stroll through a path with kangaroos and wallabies freely hopping around. There’s also a large Outback-themed playground, making it a great spot for kids to burn off some energy while moms can relax in the shaded seating area.
3. RainForest
The two-acre RainForest exhibit is perfect for those looking for an immersive, indoor experience. This tropical environment simulates the rainforests of Asia and Africa and features more than 10,000 plants and over 600 animals. Kids will be fascinated by creatures like orangutans, ocelots, and giant anteaters. The waterfall and mist add to the sensory experience, giving families a true taste of the jungle. The RainForest is an ideal spot for moms and kids to explore together, as it offers both engaging animal exhibits and educational insights into the importance of rainforest conservation.
4. Sarah Allison Steffee Center for Zoological Medicine
For families interested in the behind-the-scenes aspects of the zoo, the Sarah Allison Steffee Center is a must-visit. This state-of-the-art facility allows visitors to watch real-time veterinary care through large viewing windows. Moms will appreciate the opportunity to teach kids about animal health, and little ones will be fascinated by the medical procedures and the animals receiving care.
5. Primate, Cat & Aquatics Building
The Primate, Cat & Aquatics Building is another exciting stop. Kids will be delighted by the wide variety of primates, including playful lemurs and gorillas (for some interesting side facts on primates and lemurs, and a super travel mom who handle them, check out our blog on travel mom and primatologist Mireya Mayor). The underwater viewing areas offer a chance to see swimming tigers and other animals up close. With both land and aquatic species in one space, this exhibit keeps kids engaged with its diverse offerings.
6. Nature Discovery Ridge
Nature Discovery Ridge is an interactive play area designed to connect children with the natural world. The climbing structures, water play areas, and discovery zones provide hands-on fun for kids while allowing moms to enjoy a moment of relaxation. It’s the perfect combination of outdoor adventure and learning.
7. ZooTram and Carousel
No visit to Cleveland Metroparks Zoo would be complete without a ride on the zoo’s tram or carousel. The ZooTram makes it easy for families with young children to navigate the large zoo, and the classic carousel offers a whimsical ride featuring hand-carved wooden animals. Both activities provide simple joys for moms and kids alike.
