For many of my years working in the corporate world, I would use the phrase, "we're not saving babies here, people." When dealing with an obstacle that could be considered a crisis (such as missed ship dates, blown timelines, or questionable test results), the stress came quickly but reminding team members that "we're not saving babies" seemed to help because there aren't many jobs in society where we actually ARE saving babies.
I felt differently this week. I realized I'm now working together with a team of wonderful people who truly are saving babies.
Priya and I were honored this week to be present at a local event which showcased how women are helping women, care providers are using their available resources to help foster this help, and as a result, we all are saving babies.
This week, a ribbon-cutting ceremony was celebrated for the opening of a milk depot on Long Island. At the office of pediatrician Dr. Lauren Macaluso, with the Allied Physicians Group in New Hyde Park, breastfeeding mothers can drop off extra milk so it can be utilized by other babies. It's the first of its kind for the local area, but the lesson being shared is going further than just the counties on Long Island.
State legislators, medical professionals, women's services providers, and nursing moms were also present at the event and we all shared the same sentiment - the steps taken that day truly are saving babies.
I am very proud to be a part of something so wonderful which will help alleviate the anxiety a new mom might be feeling if she's not producing enough milk or if breastfeeding is not medically possible for her body or her baby's body. To know there's a resource available that allows a mom who has too much to share it with a mom who needs some more - it's a wonderful arrangement that will help so many women and babies. In many cases, breast milk's benefits are contributing to saving babies' lives.
