Moms how do you celebrate the dads in your life and in your baby’s life? Do you try to do something new every year to keep the day extra special for your child’s extra special guy?
Like moms, we know that different dads like different things. Some dads like to barbecue, some dads don’t. What can you do to create a Father’s Day Tradition for your family? Here are some ideas that you can start this year and build into warm celebrations for years to come.
Ball Game - Pick up a baseball, basketball, soccer ball and have a game or watch a game with your family. You can make it fancy by getting top-notch tickets to a professional team or you can just set up a quick match in the backyard.
Picnic in the Park - Pack a picnic meal in the cooler and visit a spot in your neighborhood (or even far away). Bring a blanket, some cool drinks, and you’re sure to have a good time.
Visit a Museum or Nature Site - Visiting an educational spot like a dinosaur exhibit or a planetarium is a great way to celebrate dad with your family. Sometimes families with young children can feel overwhelmed visiting a large museum because attention spans are quite short – try visiting just one room or section per year. Every year, you’ll visit the same place but you’ll have a different experience each time. See the sights for an hour or so, then grab lunch or have a picnic nearby.
Do Something New - Try a new restaurant for breakfast. We know a dad who loves to visit different diners but get the same meal at each one. Make it a point to try something new each year, and celebrate dad at each new place.
Stay Home - Many times with babies at home or children in school, schedules can be incredibly hectic and maybe just clearing the day of commitments and chores can be a celebration. Perhaps the dad in your life would like to just hang out at home and enjoy the home your family has built.
Last, ask him what he’d like to do. Dads don’t always tell us exactly what they want and it’s a great idea to not assume that your idea of a great Father’s Day matches his idea. One year my husband asked if he could spend the day cleaning the garage. I thought he was crazy and I never would have even suggested that because that sounds like the worst way to spend the day. Instead, he loved this because he had been meaning to set aside uninterrupted time to take care of it the way he wanted. He spent a few hours in the garage, sorting and organizing, and then we had a barbecue with the babies later. He loved it!
Whether it’s your hubby’s first Father’s Day or it’s his 15th, celebrate the wonderful role he plays in your life and in your children’s lives. They deserve it!
