“Your child is what you eat,” warns a new advertising campaign for Brazil’s Pediatric Society of Rio Grande (SPRS). The campaign, which has gone viral, depicts three images of moms nursing their babies with the breasts painted to appear like actual food is being consumed directly by the baby.
SPRS hired advertising agency Paim to create the campaign to raise awareness that a mother’s diet during pregnancy and breastfeeding can negatively affect the health of her baby.
One image is of a hamburger, another of what appears to be a carbonated soda beverage and the last is a sugar-coated doughnut. The text on some of the images includes, “Your habits in the first thousand days of gestation can prevent your child from developing serious diseases.”
We at Moms Pump Here appreciate the reminder that a mother's diet has serious effects on the nursing child's nutritional intake, but this campaign is another example of the shaming and blaming that breastfeeding women experience. Yes, nursing mothers need to understand how their diets (and love for Mountain Dew, Chinese food, or garlic knots) might impact their baby's growth and development but we do not need to have it shown to us this way. What do you think?
